The FIFA World Cup is undoubtedly the Greatest Show on Earth. The entire world of football comes alive with excitement and passion surrounding this tournament. Since its inception in 1930, the FIFA World Cup has seen 22 editions. However, due to World War II, the 1942 and 1946 tournaments were canceled.

So far, eight nations have claimed the prestigious title. Brazil leads the list with a record five championships. It is also the only country to have participated in every World Cup. Italy and Germany have won four titles each, Argentina has three, while Uruguay and France have both lifted the trophy twice. England and Spain have won the World Cup once each.

How many titles do the teams have?

Brazil

Brazil is the only nation to have competed in every single World Cup. The Seleção has played 114 matches in the tournament, securing 76 wins, with 19 draws and 19 losses. Legends such as Pelé, Ronaldo, Romário, Ronaldinho, Cafu, Zico, and Garrincha have graced Brazil’s championship-winning teams. The South American giants won their five titles in 1958, 1962, 1970, 1994, and 2002. However, despite their dominance, Brazil has been waiting for a sixth (Hexa) title for 21 years.

Germany

Germany did not participate in the first World Cup. They competed in the 1934 and 1938 editions but were banned from the 1950 World Cup due to their involvement in World War II. Since then, Germany has played in 20 of the 22 World Cup editions. With stars like Gerd Müller and Miroslav Klose, Germany has been the second-most successful team after Brazil. Out of 112 World Cup matches, Germany has won 68, drawn 21, and lost 23. They lifted the trophy in 1954, 1974, 1990, and most recently in 2014. However, their recent performances have been disappointing, with early exits in the group stage in both the 2018 and 2022 tournaments.

Italy

Like Germany, Italy did not participate in the first World Cup. Despite playing in the next four tournaments, they failed to qualify for the 1958 edition. More shockingly, Italy also failed to qualify for both the 2018 and 2022 World Cups—the first time in their history they missed two consecutive editions. However, when it comes to success, the Azzurri have a remarkable record. They won back-to-back titles in 1934 and 1938, later adding two more in 1982 and 2006, equaling Germany’s four titles. In their 83 World Cup matches, Italy has won 45, lost 17, and drawn 21.

Argentina

Argentina participated in the first two World Cups but withdrew from the tournaments in 1938, 1954, and 1958. They also failed to qualify for the 1970 edition. In total, Argentina has competed in 18 World Cups. The Albiceleste are the second-most successful South American team after Brazil. Their latest triumph came in 2022 when they defeated France in a dramatic final. Argentina previously won the title in 1978 and 1986. In 88 matches played at the World Cup, Argentina has secured 47 victories, drawn 17 times, and suffered 24 defeats.

France

France participated in the first three editions of the World Cup but did not qualify for the 1950 tournament. Even after receiving an invitation to play, they chose not to participate. France has played in 16 World Cups, failing to qualify on five occasions. Among European teams, they rank third in terms of success, behind Germany and Italy. France won their first title in 1998 and added a second in 2018. They came close to retaining their title in 2022 but lost to Argentina in a thrilling penalty shootout. In 73 World Cup matches, France has recorded 39 wins, 14 draws, and 20 losses.

Uruguay

Uruguay won the inaugural FIFA World Cup in 1930. Despite being the first champions, they withdrew from the next two editions. However, in 1950, they returned triumphantly, winning their second title in Brazil. Since then, they have participated in 12 more editions but have not managed to add another title. Uruguay remains a two-time World Cup champion.

Spain and England

Spain and England are two of the most historically significant football nations. Despite their rich footballing traditions, each country has only won the World Cup once. England did not participate in the first three World Cups (1930–1938) and made their debut in 1950. After competing in four consecutive tournaments, they had their crowning moment in 1966 when they won their only World Cup title on home soil. However, despite their continued presence in the tournament, the Three Lions have failed to replicate that success for nearly 60 years.

Spain has participated in 16 World Cups, but their only triumph came in 2010 when they lifted the trophy in South Africa. Since then, their World Cup performances have been disappointing, with early exits in the last two tournaments. Spain failed to progress beyond the Round of 16 in both 2018 and 2022.
